What Is the Difference Between a Gear and a Spline?

While both gears and splines involve toothed components and rotational motion,they serve different purposes:
·A gear is a toothed wheel that meshes with another gear to transmit torque and control speed or direction between rotating shafts.Gears are typically used in gearboxes,transmissions,and timing systems.
·A spline is a series of ridges or teeth on a shaft that fit into corresponding grooves in a mating component.Instead of meshing,the splines lock two components together rotationally to transmit torque along the same axis-typically between a shaft and a hub,gear,or coupling.
